San Francisco Safe Routes to School and the
Southeast Food Access Working Group
Working closely with the San Francisco Safe Routes to School (SF SRTS) team, Janna successfully wrote a $500,000 grant proposal to Caltrans to fund the team's work in SF public schools for the 2013-2014 school year. The SF SRTS team includes biking and walking advocates, school district employees, SF City and County members working to improve City policies and infrastructure, and staff from the SF department of public health. The goal of the project is to reach out to students and parents at elementary schools located all around San Francisco to educate and encourage them to walk and bike to school.
In addition to working with the SRTS team, Janna also worked with the leaders of the Southeast Food Access (SEFA) working group to write a proposal to fund their important work. SEFA is a collaborative of residents, community based organizations, and city agencies who serve as a catalyst to facilitate communication, advocacy, and accountability across city and community agencies as well as neighborhood residents to ensure that healthy, fresh, local, sustainable, and affordable produce is accessible to all residents of San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood. SEFA accomplishes this by utilizing existing venues and supporting the transformation and/or creation of new ones.
Janna worked with SEFA leaders to pull together a proposal that will be given to potential funders for a grocery store expansion project in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood. The brief outlines the problem of food security in the community, describes the purpose and accomplishments of SEFA, delineates the history and status of current retail projects, and identifies the needs and next steps to achieve SEFA’s goals. On a very limited budget and compact timeline, Janna conducted research, interviewed SEFA leaders, visited the community and interviewed the storeowner, secured professional photography services, and produced a succinct report that will be given to a group of potential funders.
Client Feedback
"Janna worked with members of a working group to develop a brief history and grant request for our work to improve access to healthy food in the Southeast Sector of SF. Despite a severely restricted budget on our part, Janna provided excellent services: professional, responsive and well written and researched. She took initiative, brought in other professionals to ensure the job would be top notch. Janna immediately understood the nature of the work and developed a working draft within a couple of days. I enjoyed working with her and look forward to doing so again in the future." Christina Goette, Sr. Health Program Planner, San Francisco Department of Public Health
