Examples of Work
In the eight years that Janna worked at the California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP), she oversaw evaluation efforts, implemented a three year priority-setting process, and was a senior member of a team that led the Special Research Initiatives (SRI)-- a $23 million effort to identify and fund innovative research addressing disparities and the environmental links to breast cancer.
Evaluation, Portfolio Analysis, and Qualitative Research
As Program Evaluator for the CBCRP, Janna was charged with developing an evaluation plan for the program. She brought together staff, board members, consultants, and other experts to research best practices, create a plan, and implement three evaluations of CBCRP's career development award types and one evaluation of the Community Research Collaboration Awards. She also led evaluation efforts for the International Cancer Research Partners (ICRP) and presented best practices at their 2008 annual meeting in London.
Prior to working at the CBCRP, Janna worked for Conwal, Inc.-- a consulting company that had several contracts with the Center's for Disease Control (CDC). Janna led a team to conduct a qualitative assessment of the CDC's directly funded HIV prevention programs. Their team conducted focus groups, site visits at ten HIV prevention programs around the U.S., and interviews with several staff members. The team published a final report, an executive summary, and a paper in AIDS Education and Prevention. If you would like to see a copy of the executive summary or report, please contact Janna.
Strategic Planning and Project Management
From 2001-2004, Janna led a multi-level priority-setting process for the CBCRP. She utilized her project management skills to coordinate data gathered from staff, commissioned papers, and panels of experts to guide CBCRP's advisory Council to make significant and bold changes to their funding strategies. A major outcome of this process was the allocation of $23 million for Special Research Initiatives -- research strategies to increase knowledge about and create solutions to the environmental links to breast cancer and the unequal burden of the disease.
To identify funding strategies for the Special Research Initiatives (SRI), the CBCRP underwent a five phase strategy development process that solicited input and expertise from hundreds of experts and advocates from around the country. As a senior member of the SRI team, Janna led the planning process, implemented stakeholder meetings, coordinated workgroups, and wrote communication documents (e.g. targeted emails, postcards, brochures, and strategy development plan).
